Kalaw is a very pretty small hill town. Getting there was a long haul, and we had more exitement than we might have liked.
This market was just north of Taungoo. I'm not sure which village it was.

As we moved north from Taungoo, we began to see the Shan hills to the east. It also got progressively dryer.

This was a village where we stopped for lunch at another Bamar place.

The hills got higher as we moved out of Tatkon.

We turned off the main road at Pyawbye and headed down a very narrow road, dodging the occasional herd of cattle.

We ran into our one and only elephant as we climbed through the hills toward Kalaw.

The scenery was very scenic.

As we neared Kalaw, we ran into more and more trucks on the road. A few minutes outside of Kalaw, a truck trying to get around a tight turn sheared off some lug nuts, causing traffic to stop for a few hours. The Myanmars stuck in traffic promptly got out, investigated the situation and settled in to wait it out.

This was one of the nicer guesthouses, and quite reasonable in the off-season. Nice scenery, good views, enclosed dining room.

The rooms were open and spacious. No airconditioner, but it wasn't necessary given the cool air.

The bath was in good shape as well.

This was a small cave pagoda on the edge of town.
