South Pacific Memorial Park June 2002

The South Pacific Memorial Park is a Japanese-built peace memorial. The memorial itself is built in the shape of hands held in prayer. Behind the memorial is Mount Mataguac, the site of the last formal Japanese resistance to the Allied invasion.

It also includes the Queen of Peace Buddhist Chapel. Just north of the chapel are the bunkers used by Lt. General Obata Hideyoshi as his last command post. He and his staff died in the bunkers when the U.S. forces sealed the entrances and burned the air out of the caverns.

There are a number of shrines and displays of wartime artifacts inside,

including the main shrine.
